Finding God’s Will for Your Life

On my nightstand sits the most wonderful Bible.

My dad gave it to me years ago, and I love to open the pages to read and to study.

However, perhaps what I love most is that this particular Bible is special.

It’s called The Adrian Rogers’ Legacy Bible. For over 35 years, Adrian Rogers was my pastor, my mentor, and our family friend.

As I read this particular Bible, I discover so many wonderful quotes, notations, and sermon summaries.

One particular of these sermon summaries, I’d like to share with you today.

Finding God’s Will for Your Life… (Adrian Rogers)

Truly, there is no higher place than the will of God.

And there are few passages of Scripture that lead you to that place more directly than Proverbs 3:5-6.

From this scripture come four steps to help you to find, follow, and finish God’s purpose for your life.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

FirstThe first step to finding God’s will for your life is to let God CHOOSE the way.

To let God guide your way, you’ve got to have confidence in God.

After all, you’re not called to trust a proposition or a plan or a formula. Instead, you begin with a vital connection with God Himself.

“Trust in the Lord.” (Proverbs  3:5)

SecondThe next step to finding God’s will for your life is to let God CONTROL the way.

Honestly, you may be willing to do God’s will. But it doesn’t do to acknowledge Him in some of your ways.

In other words, God doesn’t work part-time.

Moreover, He doesn’t have a duplex for a palace.

No, you give it all to God. And, let Him take you wherever He wants.

“In all your ways, acknowledge Him.” (Proverbs 3:6)

ThirdThe third step to finding God’s will for your life is to let God CONFIRM the way.

A lot of God’s will for you is already settled in God’s Word, and He will use His Word to lead you.

Also, God confirms His will when you pray, guiding you through the Holy Spirit.

In addition, God uses plain old wisdom.

And He leads you through providence as he opens and shuts doors.

“In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6)

FinallyThe final step to finding God’s will for your life is to let God CLEAR the way.

Proverbs 3:6 promises that God will direct your paths. “Direct” is a very interesting Hebrew word yashar. Indeed, it speaks of cutting a straight path.

It means to let God clear the way. Moreover, this same Hebrew word is used to portray John the Baptist preparing the way for the Lord Jesus Christ.

For example, he is described in Isaiah 40:3-4 as, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill brought low; the crooked places shall be made straight and the rough places smooth.'”

Now, I want you to picture a bulldozer building a road, and there’s a mountain and the bulldozer lops it off. In the first place, imagine a valley that the bulldozer fills the valley with dirt.

Next, see a stone that he moves out of the way. And, there’s a curve in the road, and he straightens the road out. Every valley is brought up. Every mountain is made low. Indeed, every obstacle is removed. The crooked is made straight.

Amazing news in finding God’s will for your life

Friend, when you get in the will of God, when you begin to obey God, God will rev up heaven’s bulldozers and go in front of you.

Truly, He will clear the road for you.

I tell you, it is true!

For this reason, let Him direct your paths.
